Experience late summer in Sweden and enjoy the wonderful nature in this area while you fish your own crayfish among the rocks and small islands of Lake Viken, a beautiful stretch of the Göta Canal.
Having a Crayfish party in late August or early September, has been a tradition in Sweden for many hundreds of years.
Originally a delicacy only the upper classes enjoyed, by the 1800s the middle classes had discovered a taste for them, and nowadays almost all Swedes celebrate the end of the summer with a crayfish party, complete with hats & lanterns, snaps to drink and lots of silly songs to join in with. Some insist you have to serve freshwater crayfish, others saltwater. Both are delicious, boiled with fresh dill. And if you can fish your own crayfish for the party, so much the better!
We’re offering you the opportunity to experience late summer in Sweden and enjoy the wonderful nature in this area while you fish your own crayfish from a boat among the rocks and small islands of Lake Viken, a beautiful stretch of the Göta Canal.
There are plenty of fantastic nature experiences to be had on and around Lake Viken. If you’re lucky you might catch sight of beaver working away, elk swimming, or black throated loons making their melancholy call. Ospreys and herons can be spotted fishing here too.
We’ll bait the crayfish pots and lower them into the waters of Lake Viken. While you’re waiting for the crayfish to creep into the traps you could go mushroom or berry picking in the magical forests nearby, like the ones you see in pictures by the Swedish artist John Bauer. Maybe you’ll see a troll peeping out!
